I don't see the big deal with SP1,it won't make Vista better for a lot of people on stability, which is fine at the moment, sure it'll fix some bugs, most Vista users keep their OS updated via WU so don't have a lot of problems.
Personally I think the main area of improvements will come from drivers not SP1,drivers are already getting better and been a quite a few releases now from both AMD and Nvidia.
Is it worth going to Windows Vista, even if you are a gamer?
Most users alread know the improvements you get in security, memory handling etc....as a gamer now on Vista x64 I have yet to find a game(not including very old 16 bit games for obivous reasons) that does not run, last count was 25 games I have installed from old classics like Might and Magic 8,XCOM-Enforcer to Stalker.
XP was a very good OS in its time, but is getting old and has been patched ,repatched etc,Vista will be taking over so its time to move on,it happened with Win2K when XP arrived and now its Vista's turn to be the new king on the block for awhile ,until Vienna arrives.
Providing your PC meets the Vista hardware requirements I would say yes.
