Is it worth going from Win2k to XP?

Just wondering, what do you guys think? I'm running Win2k pro now. Should I go to XP? Are there any big advantages? And whole WPA thing, how does that work? Will all my programs still work if I get WinXP on there? Or should I reformat (will it be slower otherwise)?

It'll be slower. Most of your applications will still run.

Out of curiosity, are you going to pay for it? 🙂

Just like Win98SE to WinME - Boots faster - More eyecandy, less performance, easier to the user, and thats about it.

Its not really slower. Maybe 3% or so. I'd say make the move. THe picture wizard is teh 1337, and the interface tweaks are nice too.

It depends on your needs.

XP is better for gaming and networking (Pro).

Win2K is just a slow bootup . . . I am still using 98SE for gaming and 2K for everything else. I am also evaluating XP on a dual-boot system. I don't care for M$' activation requirements for XP.

Oh, the recovery process is excellent too. Completely worth it.

Say you upgrade your mobo, and the new hardware causes windows not to boot. You just pop in the cd, and choose recover and it re-runs the setup but does not disturbe your program installs. Its almost like a new install, but better.

Money isn't the issue. I'm a student at college and we have a license agreement with Microsoft so I can get WinXP Pro for very very cheap. I don't really play any games, no time. Does WinXP have all the security features of Win2k? As in folder permissions, logon permissions, etc?

Yes, but they default to more secure. Believe it or not! 😀

I'm running XP Pro and it's great! After you tweak the O/S, it runs great. Win 2K is also good, but I prefer XP Pro over 2K.

I prefer XP....identical performance (actually games seem to be a bit faster) to Win2k, just as stable, more hardware support than Win2k (WinXP comes with an assload of drivers on the CD), more features, and of course the eye candy (which you can turn off and make it look like Win2k if you want.

Win 2k for "business" - writing your papers and general internet surfing etc. and Win 98 for games is a good compromise. But as I spend more time in Win 98 (recently due to GTA3) I begin to realize what a piece of garbage Win 98 really is. Games run faster in Win 98, but updating drivers and optimizing it are a real pain. I thought Win 98 was great when I was using exclusively (before Win 2k came out), but after using Win 2k for so long I got a reminder of the pains of using Win 98. It takes a lot of time and patience to get Win 98 to a point where it crashes less. So Win XP might be nice to avoid that hassle. I would still dual boot Win 2K and Win XP for a while just make sure everything is good.
