Is it worth getting back into console gaming?

I was rummaging around my storage unit, looking for some old 360/PS3/PC games, to give to my gf's nephews. One of the boxes I stumbled across had my old consoles in it. I was contemplating giving the SNES to the nephews but they wouldn't understand the significance of it and trash it. Looking through the box I pulled out my 360, blew some dust off, and reminisced about my short time with it. I haven't picked it up in years. The last game I played on it was Gears of War in 2006, right around the time when I got my 8800gts. Since then I haven't touched a console since. The initial draw for me when buying a 360 was FPS games, but I hate the sticks. I mostly played platformers and other console-specific games that PC KB+Mouse combo can't play well.

Tell me is it worth getting into back into console gaming? I have a PS3 controller hooked up my PC to play old NES/SNES, PS2, etc games through emulators(BTW, WTF Rockstar? GTA games run better through PCSX2 emulation than they do natively on PC? Seriously WTF?) So I'm still proficient with a gamepad. I mostly want to play platformers and the like. But the past 5 years not a single platformer has piqued my interest.

As you can see from my sig I have a decent rig so I love PC gaming but still love console gaming just as much. I will always have both to supplement each other as I just love games in general. I don't know why people are so lazy to learn when it comes to playing FPS's on consoles. It's not that hard to get used to it and get good with it.

I just don't game as much as I used to, so I find consoles a better choice. Upgrading hardware isn't an issue, patches are less of an issue, compatibility isn't an issue... it is just a lot less hassle.

I have both. I play pc games more often but I like to have a 360 for games like skate and fifa that are just better with a controller, and for games like those made by Rockstar which come out on console first.

I prefer the smooth feel of the mouse over the stiffness of the thumb/analog sticks, in FPS.

Doesn't everybody? But like I said, it's not hard at all to get good with a controller. If you like games in general then it shouldn't be a problem. I just don't understand why someone would let a controller get in-between them and enjoying a good game. You had to learn how to use a mouse, so it's the same thing, just learn using a controller. I love all games and will play PC games and console games just the same.

It's not just the controller in FPS games. It's the xbox live community aswell. I don't want to pay 60$ a year to be insulted by 12 year olds. If I do get back into console gaming I'll only play singleplayer games.

I haven't found one decent singleplayer game on the console that interests me that isn't on the PC already. I don't like fighting games, I don't like racing games, and I don't like sports games. I want platformers but none are as good as I hoped for.

Then there you go, you made up your mind.

Not really. I'm indecisive as fock sometimes. If there's a good singleplayer game that is exclusive to the 360, then I might jump back. If it's just brown and bloom generic FPSs I wont.

Btw, anyone know of any good 360 platformers? Please no XBLA suggestions.

It's not you, it's a shitty game. I bought it, played it for < 1 hr and then gave it to my nephew. That thing sucked!

Red Dead Redemption is a bit overrated IMO. The game and story are good but the controls are clunky. They don't feel nearly as precise as they should be, even for a console game. Kind of a trademark for Rockstar, so I hear.

I find myself floating back and forth between the two. My PC tends to get far more attention these days though. My PS3 has been collecting dust. There's just nothing for it lately that has really sucked me in. If it's cross platform, I'll get the PC version. I've got a long list of console games I want to play but no time or money for them. Sigh.

I'm the same way. I spend most of the time I game on PC now. I own a PS3 but it collects dust unless i'm running netflix or blu-ray. Not that I don't try to game on it. Every now and then a game really catches my eye and I run out and buy, just to find out that after 2-3 hours in that I just don't like sitting on my lazy boy playing games. I've bought most of the big ones (KZ2, Uncharted, FF13, LBP, etc but I find I'm always bored after a few hours of gameplay. I've owned 2 360s that ended up getting sold for the same reason. The only reason the PS3 is still here is because I use it for movies.

I just feel a detachment with console gaming that I don't feel on my PC. Maybe its just a distance thing. Maybe the mystery is gone. I used to be all about console gaming.

Why no XBLA suggestions? Download the Limbo trial and check it out. That game is a fantastic platformer.

I have a Wii and about 5-6 games for it, and I have a lot of fun playing it, but for some reason I just can't play the console for more than a half hour to an hour without getting bored on it. I can play on ghte PC for hours at a time, but can't keep my interest on the console unless I am playing with someone else.

That and I have probably around 150 games on the PC, and only 6 on the Wii. I find it funny that console games seem to make publishers more money than PC games, since I know I have spent several orders of magnitude more money on PC games than I have on Console games.

Obviously. That's why it won multiple GotY awards including the one from other developers at GDC.

Games like Infamous and Uncharted are why I own a PS3. Games like Gears are why I own a 360. Games like Minecraft, Half-Life, Baldur's Gate, WoW, and Crysis are why I own a PC.

I agree. I think most of the money made on console games actually comes from a few hugely successful titles such as Halo and Call of Duty and not from the catalog as a whole. I willing to bet that if you removed these outlyers then PC game sells would be much more comparable. I'm not saying they are the same, but it wouldn't be so obviously slanted.

I think in general developors focus has shifted away from profits over the life of the product and are more tuned toward making as much as possible on release week. From what I've seen, unless a console game is a runaway success and puts huge numbers up on day one it seems to be relagated to the bottom of the support pile and likely out of print within the year.

At least with PC games and digital distribution there is a much greater chance of longeivity. We are also on the backside of current gen console tech so we are likely to see a increase in PC releases until the next console refresh.

I prefer consoles.

I use a keyboard/mouse for 8 hours everyday at work.

Its the last thing I want to use when I get home and I'd rather sit on the couch than be at the desk.

It is simply user base. Console games have a much larger user base and therefore publishers are able to sell to more people. Simple.

Is it worth it to get back into console gaming? Sure, just don't take the shooters very seriously because they're aimed with analog sticks. There are 3rd person games that are very fun though. Consoles aren't serious gaming, but they're fun in their own way.

Ever since I connected my gaming pc(in sig) to my Samsung 3DTV, I have not touched my 360 or wii. I already sold the ps3 which was primarily my bluray player, since I can now watch blurays and any other video including 3d bluray on my pc. I am so tempted to sell my wii but I dont think it has any demand. As for the 360, its jtagged so I will keep it to try out the few games that are console exclusive

Probably not. Pc gaming ftw.

Take your favorite pc game and turn the graphics down to bare minimum, cap your fps at 30, and then use a controller to play it. How's that sound?

Okay that's a little harsh. Graphics are a big step down and gameplay suffers at the reduced fps but most people don't know any different or care. If you have a pc gamer there's no reason to play console unless they have games you're interested in that are console exclusive. I have a ps3 for the final fantasy series and fighting games.
