  • Fix it and sell it as a complete desktop

  • Trash it and sell the individual parts

I have a desktop computer my brother got from 2010 and it failed on him 2-3 months ago since the system blue screens with more than one RAM put into place (probably a motherboard memory slot issue).

Basically, the system right now has nothing but an AMD Phenom II processor and the AM3 motherboard with the faulty memory controller. I was thinking of buying a stick of 8 GB RAM DDR3 for $60 or so and putting it in there along with a 1 TB currently in my desktop that I am not using and 400 W PSU ($40). I also have an HD Radeon 7770 1 GB that i can shove in there.

The total for fixing comes up to about $100.

Would you buy a computer like this for $300-400? Or should I just sell my parts individually (CPU, faulty motherboard, 1 TB hard drive, 7770, etc).

If the system was fully functional, $300-$400 might be quite reasonable. Knowing that you suspect that the motherboard is defective, can you in good conscience sell it to someone else without telling them that? And if you do tell them, I would expect a lower price since the buyer will have to consider the cost of replacing the motherboard.

since the memory controller is on the cpu, it is possible that one channel on the cpu is toast but without a spare to test you can't tell if it's the board or the cpu. and most likely an 8g dimm wont work, it's probably limited to 4g at most.

I can get a very capable Dell, new, for $400 at MicroCenter... souped up and ready to roll without problems and with a warranty.

^^^This.

Make a charitable donation to someone less fortunate.

If you don't have any use for it, donate it. Or just sell the parts that you know are working.
