Is it worth buying a PS3 if you don't have an HDTV?

Eh? My 2 year old nephews are destroyers and have ruined our current tv, so we don't want to get an HDTV yet. But i'm getting a PS3 soon :

Thoughts?

New non CRT TVs are a lot less susceptible to burn ins. They rarely happen on plasma and LCD and the other technologies don't burn in period.

I think so.
1. The best games aren't being release on older systems anymore. PS2 still get releases that may appeal to you, but the best games are coming out on the newer systems.
2. Online play
3. The games will still look better, they just won't be higher resolution. Resolution isn't the only difference between the last two generations. You also have far more polygons in models now, which will be apparent on an SDTV.

Is it worth watching TV if it's not in hidef?

If you answer "yes" then you have answered your initial quesiton, if you answer "no" well then I pity your technological elitism.

I just bought a PS3 last week and i still have a 36" CRT and I am rather happy with my purchase. The fact that I've barely ever watched an HDTV helps with me not caring about the lower resolution, though admittedly I do have a 24" LCD on my computer. Still, I wanted to play on the couch in the living room instead of sitting in front of the computer to play. When I get an HDTV sometime this year, it will be all that much sweeter.

If this is all about the games, and I'm assuming it is since you are not going to enjoy Blu-Ray on a CRT, why would you choose the PS3? Or is this the answer you were looking for in hopes of starting a flame war?

You def. aren't getting everything you are paying for.

Seriously tho, you can go get a $1000 HDTV at BestBuy, financing it for free for 2 years and get a PS3 as well. How can you lose in that deal? HD is cheap.

I would say no, since HDTVs are really cheap. I got my 37 inch for around $500.

"Cheap" is relative - $500 is a lot of money to most people.

Kinda... I'm running my PS3 off my 2407's component ports since I won't pay for a DVI switcher and my computer is using the DVI port right now. Everything looks blurry, but still very playable. If you can stand slightly sub-par (not to potential) graphics, and you should, the games more than make up for not having an HDTV.

Agreed. And $500 is really a stretch for getting a decent HDTV. I've seen deals like that around, but most 32-37" TVs are more like $800. $500 seems to only get you about 27", which isn't much bigger than a large computer monitor and not really suited to a living room.

On top of that, you have to actually buy the console itself too, and games. If you do find a $500 HDTV and then buy a PS3 and two games, you've just dropped $1000 on gaming stuff. Seems pretty steep.

I have a Wii hooked up to my TV, which is a 27" CRT. The graphics are sharp and detailed enough. Nothing spectacular, but it's not bad considering I got the TV for free. And while I'd love to get an Xbox 360 or PS3 (the Wii has a pretty boring game library to me, outside of local multiplayer), it's hard to drop hundreds of dollars on a new console only to have to hook it up to a mediocre screen. Especially when I already have a gaming PC.

Well, if you are into gaming at all. PS3 is still going to be a major upgrade from last generation's products. The graphics are still going to be pretty amazing, albeit if they aren't in high def especially if its on a smaller 36" or less CRT.

Do you think that's because you're using component cables, or because you're not using the native resolution of the screen? Nothing looks blurry for me with component cables (using a TV).

Combination exclusive to the Dell 2407 monitor. I've read lots of 'reviews' (i.e. bitching) about the 2407's component input, and the consensus is that it's a dud as a result of a crappy analog/component chip. Also, I'm running 720p stretched 1:1 to full screen due to the inability of the monitor to take 1080p through component. I've tried 1080i, but it looks practically the same as stretched 720p. This leaves me with the option of running at 720p 1:1 pixel mapping, which I won't do cause I payed for a lot more pixels.

question...will regular dvds (and Blu-ray dvds) look better on my SDTV, or will they look the same? I realize that its not even close to fulfilling its potential in this aspect either, but im just curious if there would be any benefit over my crappy regular dvd player.

PS3 is a better than average DVD player, but I would say there will be no perceptible difference.

True, cheap is completely relative. When I said cheap, I was thinking back to the days when HDTVs were a lot more expensive. Also, the model I got was a 37 inch Olevia HDTV, but it's not full 1080p. The TV only goes up to 1080i. Still, I see little difference between my TV and the expensive TVs my friends have. However, I'm no visual expert.

He didn't mention ANYTHING about games OR other consoles.

You're just a stupid troll

You can still have fun without the neat graphics. If graphics are important to you at all, HDTVs are cheap enough that you can pick one up for ~$500 and have at least 720p.

If you don't care about graphics, you can play the PS3 on a normal TV and still have fun.
