Is it worth $50 to add a .1 to an existing 5.1 surround system?

I have an existing 5.1 surround sound system in my family room with a Velodyne VRP-1200B subwoofer (130 watt rms). A local store has the VRP-1200B on lcearance for $75 and I have a $25 giftcard

The room is about 12x18 and the sub is in the right front corner. I have a locatoin in the left back corner for another sub and enough (~30ft) subwoofer LFE cable to run under the floor to reach it (To the best of my knowladge there are no power conduits along the planned route).

I would slit the existing LFE line and run it to both subs

I have a sony strdg800 reciever
BA VRC center, BA VR2 fronts and BA CR67B rears

I know this is subjective, but opinions would be welcome!

you could also do stereo subs to line up with your left and right speakers, though i do not know how well that would work with a surround system, it is pretty neat with a stereo setup.

I have read good things about your proposed setup as far as flattening out the low frequency in the room. I am not familiar with that particular sub to know how it would perform.

One note: I hope "slit" is a typo and you mean split. I hate the thought of you cutting wires when a simple Y wire splitter would suffice.

If you're happy with the first one I don't think you can go wrong with a 2nd identical sub for $50. Should help "even out" the bass response in the room if you can get them setup well.

Setting up dual subs can be a bit tricky so you might have to play with placement as well as phase to get good results. I had to try half a dozen locations for trying to set up my dual subs before I found positions where the response really got better with the duals.

Thanks for the responses guys.
Reel: yeah - I meant split. A Y connector looks so much better than spliced cable and electrical tape 🙂

YOyo: How did you know it was a good placement? Did the bass just sound even all around you as opposed to uneven?

I used

+ my SPL meter

In some positions my somewhat uneven response got more uneven as peaks that already existed were reinforced by the other sub. I still have a medium sized dip in my bass response but I was able to tame most of the peaks with better placement and adding the second sub.

Once I'm out of this apartment I'll get some room treatments and then decide if it's worth it to get an equalizer to tame the bass further.
