Yes. Assuming that you do not need any power in the system, I would go for it.

How much is the sys in total? ($)

If you're not using it for anything CPU-intensive, $200 is a lot of money to save. I'd go for the celery if I was only going to use the notebook for research.

Ditto.

If the laptop is already going to cost you $1300 or more, definately pay the extra. If it's a grand already, I'd go for it. If it's under $1000, then you really have to think about whether it's worth it.

i suggest getting a P4m even if it is clocked slower
just get the same P4m in that price range and you'll prob get similar performance if not more

you can also throw a Desktop P4 in a laptop if you don't care about power saving features and want to save a few bucks

You could also look at a lower clocked Pentium M, but the celery is good for school stuff. :)

It's a no-brainer. If you're not going to game than the Celeron is fine...if you want to game even casually the Pentium 4-M or the desktop Pentium 4 is the way to go.

Ok celeron sux.... end of story period, gg kthx. I'd rather have a 1.8 p4 than a 3ghz celeron *if there is such a thing*. the performance just ISNT there. But, if youre going to be writing papers and surfing the internet, listening to music and chatting. You will never know the difference. WHY DONT YOU GAME?!??! lol =) Good luck!

You know for the extra $220, you could build yourself a Brand new AthlonXP combo as a desktop.

Frys has AthlonXP 1800 + MB for only $70-80
All you need is some memory, HD, and a case..or yeah a good video card would be nice.

centrino if possible. its all about battery life and heat for laptops. that and noise:p

you don't need uber cpu power to run office apps and matlab, just money down the toilet. a laptop isn't an investment, if anything dies, from lcd to keyboard to whatever or you drop it, or spill something on it, its either not replaceable and the whole thing is basically trash or an extreme pain to fix. spend as little as you can get away with.

Before deciding between a Celery and P4...
Take a look at the AMD machines also...

I assume you are buying the Inspiron 1100 from dell...

You could take a look at HP, will get AMD notebooks for almost the same money...

The "lower clocked" Pentium M chip is about 160% faster than a P4 chip. For example a M @ 1.6 GHZ would be a P4 @ 2.56 GHZ

wouldnt a 1.6 GHz PM be around the speed of a 3.6GHz P4 than? ;)

also, i would think that a PM @ 1.6GHz would be closer to a 2.4GHz P4.
