Is it unsafe to keep cookies for sites like your email?

I was wondering, if I decided to check "Keep me logged in for two weeks" on Gmail, is there any unsafety to that? For example, if someone ever gained access enough to snoop around for files on my hard drive, would they be able to interpret the cookie to obtain my password? I'm not really sure what exactly is stored within a cookie.

So if someone found the cookie on my HDD, they wouldn't be able to pull out anything useful from it? Because I'd like to stay logged in to my bank's site if it's safe, as well.
