Is it uncommon for a soon-to-be 17 year old to have never HAD a growth spurt?

I've been 5'6 since 8th grade. I'm a junior now. Everybody's been sprouting since this past summer, but i guess i've been left in the dust. In the years preceding 8th grade, i only grew about an inch or so every grade, nothing close to a spurt. And lately all the girls i've been meeting up with are 5'7, 5'8, and this is starting to get annoying, and demoralizing . Am i a late bloomer, or am i a non-bloomer? Btw, my brother, who's 26 now, he had his growth spurt one summer...

You may have an inch or so left in you, but I think by that age you've usually hit your peak, at least your vertical peak.

Of course everyone is different...

I don't think lifting weights had anything to do with his growth spurt :)

Acutally lifting weights may stunt your growth, they recommend heavy lifting only to people who have finished growing.

Hey, that's how my pa has told it to me about 500 times. He said he was about 5'4" at
the start of grade 11, started lifting weights, and grew to about 5'10" by the start of
grade 12. I've heard lifting weights can stunt growth in young people, but he would
have 16-17ish at the time.

A friend of mine was about 5 foot 7 at graduation and then hit 6 foot around age 20

I got my spurt in 7th grade - went up to 5 foot 11

By high school graduation I grew to 6 foot 1

Haven't grown since

Spurt in Grade 9, now 5'10. I'm only 15 now, so I hope there's still some stuff left in me.

I'll let you in on a little secret. Now, I'm probably going to get in trouble with the International League of Grown Up Men for revealing this to a teenage boy, but I'm feeling compassionate today:

You don't look retarded when you are with a woman taller then you. Everyone assumes that you are either:

A. Rich
B. Brilliant
C. Have a big wanger

In other words, it makes you look like a stud.

Don't worry, some people develope late. There was a kid I knew who was 18 before his voice changed, so consider yourself lucky.
I never really had a problem growing, I am about 5'11.

A bone doctor should be able to tell how much more you are likely to grow, based on X-rays of your limbs(really).

I hit 5'6" at ~age 14 or 15, and have stayed there for 33 years. On the bright side, I've never been overweight, and have no trouble maintaining very good upper body strength with absolutely minimal exercise. I'd rather be trim and short -- able to eat about anything I want -- than be weak, fat, and tall.

6th grade I was about 5'2
7th grade I was about 5'3
8th grade I was about 5'4
9th grade I was about 5'6
10th grade I was about 5'9
11th grade - I'm not 5'10 1/2 and wear a size 12-12.5 shoe.

In 7th grade we did an experiment which our science teacher said was pretty accurate... determining the height of a person when he's fully grown up. My experiement showed I was gonna end up about 5'6... obviously that didn't work :) Have hope

BAHAHAHHAHAH!

Well, don't boys grow up 'til about age 20/21?

Don't be all worried! I am female, yet I added some height at age 18 after staying stagnant at 5' 10.5" for a while. For a while I thought I was done wearing my height. But all of a sudden, everyone was like "wow! you've grown so tall!" Even now, I have reached my sis' height with just about 0.5 inch difference.

So, if a girl can do it, you can do it too! ;) Hehehe! You still have about 3-4 years chance. ;) Chill and have fun while it's processing! :D

P.S.: I'm now 6' 1"! ;)

I feel for ya. I went ahead and made varsity football while growing only to 5'3" my senior year (I was a mean lil bastard). When I went to college, I stopped lifting weights and started drinking the hard stuff (beer didn't get me there quick enough for me). By the time I was a Junior in college, I grew to 5'11". I finally topped off at 6'.

My parent made me take Cotillion when I was in junior high (Cotillion is learning ballroom dancing, what to wear-formal, informal, how to eat - what fork, when - basically how to be a gentleman/lady). I had a crush on a girl a year younger than me. I asked her to the Cotillion formal and she said yes. However, when we were posing for pictures, I was the one who had to stand two stairs up on the staircase while she was standing on the floor beside me.

The best advice is to look at your parents' family. Are they all short? You've had better diet, health care and nutrition, so you should be an inch or two taller than your dad.

[EDIT:] A doctor friend of mine just told me your bones don't stop growing or thickening until you are 30-32 (white guys w/ european heritage). So drink your milk!
