Is it true that when booting os x loads whatever is on desktop?

I believe it was at one time, at least I recall reading it from a reputable source. However, after doing some quick research on more current (Tiger & Leopard) stuff it looks like it may no longer be true. Furthermore, I just ran a quick experiment. I booted up 3 times. The first time was with an empty desktop, and I had 334MB used at boot. I then did it again. It was 340MB... so acceptably close in my opinion. I then put some pictures (about 300MB worth) onto my desktop and booted again. It was 335MB that time.

So, at least in Leopard, at least on my MacBook, it does appear to make any difference.

no.. I hate having a bunch of stuff on my desktop. I pretty much keep a couple folders of projects that I'm working on, simply because it's much quicker for me to get to the folder in any app just by hitting CMD+D in the open/save dialogs. But that's it. It's clean other than that.

ok : ) but am i the only person who dislike having too much stuff on the desktop?

my desktop is empty. sans the occasional PDF that gets plopped on (I'm not sure why the desktop is the catch space for that, even tho I have a different download dir).

I struggle even to pick a background sometimes. I rarely am looking at the background... I have windows covering everything, seems almost pointless.

When I drag images from the browser, i put them onto the desktop since I always have a little bit of space there that I can drag it to.
