My Lumina 920 was lucky to last 10 hours with limited use. No way it would do multiple days.

Sounds like you had some vampire app or something. Obviously, I'm not trying to defent it,especially since there is no task manager in wp to help you find the vampire. Happened to me also. Never found who was the culprit, but after uninstalling some apps, my battery life went from 1 to 2.5 days or so.

thats one of the nicer things about android, you can go into the battery meter and see whats been draining power. For me the screen is always the worst culprit, but I dont normally have any one app constantly running and sucking up power.

I think since all we have is anecdotal evidence and benchmarks testing constant use, the best way to bench how long a phone might realistically last under some use and long periods of idle is to use the GSM Arena Endurance rating. It's not the best, but they're the only guys who measure idle power consumption.

Are you talking about the Lumia line? Getting 2 to 3 days of battery life on them is do-able, but you'll be making a lot of concessions. Plan on plugging in nightly. Anandtech does have Lumia's in their battery life charts, though those are worst case scenario.

My normal usage is basically texting and checking NBA scores on my Lumia 928 - if that's all I'm doing it'll go at least 2-3 days no problem and I'm pretty sure I haven't made any significant changes to settings. Though I do have it set to lock/sleep after only like 10 seconds of inactivity and I have turned off certain things I don't use like Bluetooth and Wi-Fi unless I'm actively using them.

The only thing I do with it that really uses significant battery life is play an emulator but even then I get through 1-2 days no problem depending how much I play it.

Is this true that their battery life is so much better than the likes of iPhone or Galaxy S4 which needs to be charged at least twice a day if you're using it heavily or BlackBerry which needs to be charged at least once a day?

I really would like to buy a phone that I can use heavily chatting on whatsapp without being so paranoid about my battery depleting

and how is whatsapp on nokia phones anyway?

When I still used it, I only needed to charge my Nokia (E75) once every 4-5 days. Whatsapp is working perfectly without a problem. You simply download the app from here: http://www.whatsapp.com/nokia/

(I know this is probably not what you meant, but you asked about Nokia and Whatsapp, so I answered)

Running GDR3 on my 928, obviously doesn't have the Black firmware update from Nokia, but nice to have anyway. Not many daily changes, more continuing bug fixes more like. Hopefully 8.1 actually shakes it up a bit and makes some progress. A unified notification center would be nice (personally, I prefer the "left of Start screen" concept for that). Perhaps breaking out some system apps to be (free) Store apps would be a good idea as well (email, calendar, camera, even Office). Allow easier and faster updating that way. But I digress.

. . . and I have turned off certain things I don't use like Bluetooth and Wi-Fi unless I'm actively using them.

And that applies to any brand. When not using it, just put it in "Airplane Mode."
