Is it true that more wireless companies are coming out with Two-Way talk radio cell phones? (i.e. sprint?)

I heard sprint is coming out with the two-way talk thing like the one nextel has, is this true? Does anyone know if any of the other wireless companies are going to do this?

Wonderful. Yet another "improvement" to Sprint's service which the CSR's won't know jack about for a year, won't be implemented correctly for at least six months, and will give users even more of an opportunity to drop calls.

<--- bitter ex-SprintPCS user. :D

Honestly I haven't heard about Sprint doing this..it would require a renovation of their entire network as I don't think CDMA has the provisions for such a thing.

I think that is correct. My dad and I were in the Nextel office about 2 weeks ago and talking to the sales rep. She said that Nextel owned the patent for the "walkie-talkie" function but it is going off patent so other phone manufacturers/service providers will introduce it soon.

AFAIK, Sprint and Verizon are both currently field testing push to talk (PTT) services, so that they'll be perfectly ready when the Nextel patent expires. The 1x CDMA system that they both recently upgraded to is apparently pretty easy to adapt for PTT.

If Sprint PCS were to offer a Nextel walkie talkie like service bundled with their PCS vision with 500 weekday, some night & weekend and offer it for $59.99/mo I'd take it.

Yes it's $20/mo than I'm paying now but I'll take it for those extra features.
