If you've done hardcore drugs, then it's probably a reasonable expectation that you may have done something to contaminate your blood and it's not worth the expense for them to process only to have it thrown away? But, I'm just speculating.

I don't think that would disqualify someone forever. They'll ask a bunch of questions and the person should answer them truthfully. I give blood pretty regularly and the questions about drug use are related to using needles (no surprise) and for things unrelated to needles they ask "have you used <fill in the blank> in the last <some period of time>."

If you donate blood and they find any opiate(illegal drugs, pain killers etc), you will be barred from ever giving blood again.

No, its is absolutely not true, unless you were doing it IV. Same goes for plasma donations.

In actuality if you do answer yes to using hard drugs (which you should if you have) they will be required to test your blood for various things. Depending on the availability of your blood type they may just throw your blood away rather than bother with the expense of testing it.

I take that back. There is another excluder which obviously would rule you ineligible:

you have taken drugs or money in exchange for sex since 1977;

Sorry. :eek:

well, the contents of the blood changes over time. However, hard core drug addicts, who inject... well... after some time, the veins used by the addicts in the arms collapse. And they move on to veins in their legs...

yes, but it depends on where you go. They ask questions to you face to face and verify info. If they do take your blood, they will run many tests on it to see if it's clean. If so, they will accept it. If not, you will probably get a call from them.

is there any way to purify your blood, if you were in this entirely hypothetical situation?

nope they can't detect it.
it gets out of your system quite fast. you should be fine for a test less than a week later.

I believe anyone who tells you this is full of it. ive done lots of drugs in my life and I give blood. coke only stays in your system for a few days, at least by drug-testing standards. I've done coke before and just gave blood last month, they even sent me an updated donor card. they sure didnt have any problems with what I gave them....but then again, im O+ so I could probably have syphilis, aids and by an IV user and they'd take it ;)

I wouldn't think doing coke would preclude you from ever giving blood, because it's snorted and not injected. But what do I know. :)

Ummm, yeah your question has been answered. Even though you got all coked up and talked about the world's problems until 7 am last saturday you'll still be able to give blood. :)

i suppose i did mistake 'jhu' for 'you' but given the fluency of this post it's quite difficult to understand what exactly you're trying to get through specially when you talk about yourself in the third person. my bad.

Nothing I have ever heard, or read here, would make a former cocaine user ineligible to give blood. IV drug users and prostitutes are ineligible because they are relatively likely to have bloodborne infections like HIV and hepatitis, but I have never been asked anything pertaining to other drug use in the course of giving blood (though I have never used cocaine or any IV drug, or been a prostitute).
