is it true that FWD is better than RWD in the snow?

We and my friends are driving up to tahoe in a couple of days

My friend said to take my honda accord (FWD) rather than using his BMW 330i, however I feel that his car is actually safer to drive
through the snow because it has DSC and everything.....

But He said FWD cars are better in the snow compared to RWD

so?

Is it true that you could search throught the "RWD vs. FWD" debates and find the answer to this question?

but I am also comparing honda accord to BMW 330 here...

I think it has to do with the driving wheels being in front with weight on them as opposed to in the rear pushing w/o the benefit of weight assisted traction.
<___Hates driving in snow.

How about this one: is it true that you could have been any less of a d*ck?

Good lord, the guy was just asking a question. So he forgot or didn't feel like using the search function...be freakin' deal. I'm sure it just ruined your day for you to voluntarily enter this thread, read his question, realize it'd been answered before, and then reply with an oh-so-helpful comment. Hoorah for intelligence!

while i agreed with your first post, i dont agree with this one. he obviously meant it to be ignorant and non helpful and i dont think you should be nice to him. i hate when people say stupid things like "search for it"

everything has been talked about on these forums. if we all searched for it, no one would talk anymore. gdamnit that is so annoying.

Yes, my post was ignorant and non-helpful.

Don't be nice to be. HAHAHAHAHAHAH.

well, i just came up from tahoe. we took my friend's 323ci instead of my eclipse gt because hers had more room for our things, but it turned out that her traction control was *extremely* useful up there.

so the question should be, what's better - FWD with no traction control, or RWD with traction control?

front wheel drive is better than rear wheel drive in MOST slippery conditions for MOST drivers.

snow, rain, mud whatever fwd is better.

it's better to be pulling than pushing in those conditions all other things being equal. obviously if the bimmer had chains or snow tires and the honda had bald tires / no chains then the bimmer would be a bit better, but i'd be willing to bet that the honda would still be safer, you just wouldn't go anywhere cause no traction.

also to you repost cops, STFU. it's just a simple questions. sheesh.

did the bmw have the sport packagae??

my friend's has

IMHO...
I've driven FWD cars (Honda Prelude, Toyota Camry, Mitsubishi Eclipse (not AWD) and several others) and RWD cars with "traction control systems" (Infiniti Q45 and Mercedes 400S). Although (or maybe because) the latter two cars are much bigger and heavier than the FWD cars I've driven in snow, they've performed fairly poorly.

While the "traction control systems" do help a lot in bad weather, the RWD cars still can't compete with the FWD cars in snow.

That's my anecdotal evidence.

What's "DSC?"

DSC is dynamic stability control... BMW's fancy name for traction control...

I just drove my 240 in the snow today. And the Maxima. Maxima is much easier to drive while the 240 i smore fun in empty places such as parking lots.

With the 240sx, you are forced to be extra careful, you have ot look at the road in front of you and see what kind of crap is ont it (snow, slush, a bit of both, etc..) and drive accordingly. Keep distance, drive slow, rarely go above 3k RPM, and stay in a high gear as long as possible.

Now you shoud be doing all these things in a FWd car as well, but a lot of poeple don't and sometimes get away with it.

You know what, I think eveyone should drive a RWD in teh snow..that way they will be FORCED to drive carefully.

Also, in RWD you steer with the throttle...more gas more u turn.

Also both cars have Nokian Hakka1's for winter tires...WINTER TIRES ARE ESSENTIAL!

DSC does a lot more than regular traction control. It will tap one wheels' brake to stop a spin or fish tailing too.

i think so. which also made it ridiculously hard to connect the chains since there's so little clearance between the tires and the car. since her hands were smaller, i got the chains ready to connect, and then she got out of the car and connected the inner part of the chain since my hands couldn't fit back there.
