Of course dog fighting is barbaric, but I've heard that this has happened before. Is it really true?

I doubt it, you been to the zoo lately to see how freakin huge a lion is? Not to mention that's their jaws are ALOT bigger then pitbull jaws.

I bet it would be a good fight. The pits would last a long time, imo. I'm guessing they'd be a lot quicker than the lion and would be able to dart in and out. That said, the Lion would prolly prevail in the end.
Now I'd LOVE to see some of the lame @ss ganstas that raise pits for fighting have to go heads against a lion.

I really, really doubt it. An adult male lion is nearly 10 times heavier than a pitbull and has a far larger and more powerful jaw, not to mention four paws that can be used as weapons as well.
I've heard of hyenias taking down lions, but they are much more adept at it than a pitbull that's had very little exposure to such a beastie.

Animal Planet and Discovery Channel has told my hyenas usually run away when a male lion shows up. They just gang up on the female lions.
2 or 5 pit bulls would have no chance. The lion could break their backs with one swipe, much less getting his teeth involved. I doubt that a pit bull could ever get close enough to a lion's neck to do much, and then his mouth wouldn't be big enough to kill the lion. Plus the lion would bite him in half if he got that close. PLUS, I'd say a male lion is quicker, even though he's much bigger.
No contest. Heck, a female lion could slam 2 pits, and she wouldn't even think of taking on a male lion.

In fact chances are a Hyena would take out a pit bull pretty easily. They are twice as big and about 10 times as mean. They have a jaw that produces more force per inch than any other land animal.
Male lions are just so big that other carnivores leave them alone. Hyenas will run before going one on one with a lion, unless it is cornered. Even then hyenas die rather quickly when grabbed around the neck and then shook with so much force that their spine is broken quickly. There's is just no escape when held in jaws that big. Pure brute force.

heh on nature i watched a couple lion vs yahena(sp) battles. female lions are good hunters, but only ok fighters against hayenas. males are around to kick @ss!! its like slam and the damn hayenas back is broken, end of fight the lion would either grab the dog shake its back/neck to peices, or just swat it with a paw and break it in two

The bear had all of it's weapons taken away and subsuquently lost.

seriously though, I gaurantee that i pitbull could kill any tiger. That is assuming you dropped it from high enough and could aim it just right. However, in a fight my bet would be on the tiger.

lion would win for sure. i saw a nature show where a male lion took on about 4 hyenas. 2 were dead with 5 seconds, and a third had a broken back within another 5 secs. it was amazing.

From what I know a pack of African wild dogs will sometimes take down a lion, course we're talking about a pack of dogs, not just two.
The only thing a grizzly bear will run from, is a pack of dogs....or wolves. Any sort of wild dog pack, is a terrible opponent for any animal to face.
When I was going to college I worked at the St Louis Zoo as an announcer for the summer animal shows they had. During one memorable lion and tiger show I witnessed a fight between four adult male lions and one male tiger. Wildest thing I have ever seen. When it was over all the lions were severely injured. Two had to be taken out of the show for the rest of the season. Two more limped badly after that. The tiger was a little bloody...couldn't tell too well. It was probably lion blood. That fight didn't end till the trainer, who was in the ring all the time, hit the tiger over the head with a massive pole. The tiger who was chomping a lion at the time, just looked up, then jumped back on his little stand. Heh.
While all this was going on, I was saying, "don't worry folks, everything is under control". Ha. You never heard such roaring...people screaming, mass panic. How I spent my summer.
The most dangerous show was the elephant show...when those animals lost it, everybody was in danger.
They also had a chimp show...cute little chimps huh? I saw one go crazy once. Not very big at all, maybe 40 lbs. It took four men to subdue it.

Do a search on bear baiting, several dogs CAN take on a grizzly.
Also, hyenas never aim to KILL a lion, all they want to do is to annoy it enough so that it will move away from the carcass so that they can eat it.
