From the reviews it seems like ocing it doesn't give that much gain in performance as gtx460s give.

is this true or am I missing something ?

ATI cards generally don't scale as well with overclocks as Nvidia's Fermi cards do, but that said the hd5850 is usually a very good overclocker and can usually surpass a stock hd5870 in performance.

Overclocking gains got improved with the hd 6x000 series. Good example the HD 6870 BE which got a nice boost in performance when oced.

its true, but not many will admit it. Its not much though like a few % difference.

Ravenseal has a 900mhz 6850, he can tell you the percantage gains on that.

Well the 460 seems to have more headroom, allowing for more impressive overclocks. (Being cheaper doesn't hurt either).

Gives me about 15-20% gain on Just Cause 2 @920/1130, which amounts to 5 FPS or so in Concrete jungle bench at mid settings 1080p. Totaling 45 fps.

My dual core struggles does struggle though...so you can probably see even better figures with a quad/i7

Uhh, the 460 starts lower performance to begin with. Once both are OC'ed they are really not that far off each other in terms of performance.

It's not a matter which will overclock better, but value for the money.
Value means different things to different people too.
Some consider 3-6 monitor Eyefinity added value, some don't.
Some consider CUDA / Physx added value, some don't.
Some consider lower power consumption added value, some don't.

Depending on what value means to you, either the 460 or 6850 could be the best choice. However, you should probably consider the 5850 too if you are considering either of these cards, as it tends to dip into the same price range.

Competition between nVidia and ATi is actually pretty close right now, they both have their niches that they excel in, and overall performance for the dollar is pretty close.

The Op was talking about overclocking scaling, not how much a card overclocks.

I imagine the lack of a second 6 pin power connector could play into this seeing as how the power draw is already close to the max spec

raven take down that link , I just got a malware attack from the images when I clickd on it. D:

:edit: I clicked on the stalker bench and a pop up and spyware was trying to load. Some people might think its really attacking there system and push ok, then it loads.

Not sure what your talking about, but the image, the page and imageshack load fine and I don't see any malware there.

Since when does imageshack load spyware into peoples computers?

You'll probably get some time off for that. I hope you don't, but some people live on it. Some people it's the reason they post stuff that inflames people. Just to get them banned. We need to stop and think about that before retaliating. The weasels win when you do.

I dont know, but that "you have a virus crap" and said it was doing a system scan. It started in a pop-up and I had to use system manager to shut it down.

Maybe you need to use a browser with a popup blocker.

The thread and link are clean, verified, but happy medium what is probably happening is that you have something on your rig that needs to be removed as it is redirecting URL's (your browser is compromised and getting hijacked).

It happens, very common for malware to do this, even when you have AV and anti-malware active. I've got both Norton Internet Security and SUPERAntiSpyware and malware still makes it through on occasion.
