According to Apple you have to have WindowsXP in order to use a synch iPod you would purchase from them. I realize that iTunes v7.5, 7.4 and 7.3 require WinXP or Vista, but if one were to install iTunes v7.2 on a computer running Windows 2000, wouldn't they be able to synch their new iPod Nano?

Yeah, that's what I was thinking, too.. from a strictly hardware standpoint, the thing has got to work in Win2K if it works in WinXP. As far as my understanding goes, these two OSs which were first developed simultaneously, use the same drivers for a given device. Please feel free to correct me if I am wrong, bc I do not claim to be an expert.

If you look at Apple's product pages, they seem to be indicating that iPods "require" WinXP... Well, that cannot be right, or can it??

"Windows system requirements

* PC with USB 2.0 port
* Windows Vista or Windows XP Home or Professional with Service Pack 2 or later"

I hope there is someone out there who can say something definitive about whether or not these things work with Win2K bc my friend wants to buy one for her son for the holidays and does not feel like having to return it and make him cry, nor does she see a need to "upgrade" from Win2K to WinXP... and, lol, no, she cannot afford to buy a new computer so she can "upgrade" to Vista, either... Thanks in advance for the help~

I realize that.. what Apple is indicating on their site is that the new iPods all "require" WinXP or Vista, in addition to iTunes 7.5. Thanks for the reply.

I have tried to install it already.. downloaded directly from Apple... it does not install.. you get a message... you have to go back to 7.2... it is not just iTunes that concerns me, it is whether or not the actual hardware (the iPod itself) will be recognized by Win2k. Apple seems to be indicating that it will not.. lol, I know there has to be someone else out there running Win2K who has experience with these new iPods..

Yeah, that is my feeling.. if it were me who was buying it, I would not hesitate.. I just know that I could make it work.. you may have noticed that I mentioned that I am inquiring for a friend who needs to be sure it is going to work with her OS so her son is not disappointed... perhaps I will just buy the Nano she has picked out, confirm that it works with yamipod, then sell it to her if it works, or return it if it does not.

thanks again for the input, really helpful :)
