Is it true that with the athlon64-bit processors they dont support error correcting memory? If so, why is that and why not? Granted it may slow the memory down a bit but wouldn't you want ecc?

Yes both the Opteron and FX series do. I don't think it cost much more. $299 for very good OCZ 2-2-2-6 reg/ecc vs. $253 same quality but unregisered non-ECC. This is for 2x512 PC3200.
