I've installed it a bunch of times without registering cause we get licenses and I just install the cd and I've never heard of that, actually I've heard of something like that in academic versions but that may not be correct since I've never used one.

this was something that microsoft supposably only put into the academic versions of office to keep people from copying it. Not sure about a fee to register it if it locks though

No, it's not true. Unless there's a version of Office out there that I don't know about....

you probably shouldnt try to register software you didnt buy. Office 2000 Pro does not quit working after time. I would believe that about the academic version though, that sounds pretty MSish. 42 is a oddball number though, he may be f--king with you on that....

You have probably downloaded SR-1a update and now after starting it is closing itself few seconds later... If so, try quering those symptoms on Microsoft help site. You will find there a work-out for this problem. In case your copy of Office came from some kind of Warez site, you will need to use different serial number (is it Premium version?)... Don't forget that if you want to use this software, you should buy it first... ;)

Microsoft Office 2000 academic can be started 50 times and then disappears from your desktop if you don't register it and you get this message the first time you startup after a fresh install. I have installed and registered mine at least 15 times for my daughter as she changed machines, had system crashes, and put it on my machine for a backup installation, and more reinstalls from component upgrades and the like, all with no static from MS. I can't imagine someone working for MS that is so bored that they are going to come after me for multiple registrations. They can't get blood from a turnip.

there's also a Burgandy edition that's given to LAR's it could be one of those. they are basically a final beta's but not the gold ones (if I'm correct). Those may need to be registered after a while. Again I could be wrong.

i dont know, a company like that could probably get blood out of a turnip, you just have to smash the hell out of it :)
MS usually targets distributors and large companies with LOTS of licenses. Theres more money for less audit...
