Is it true about adding 'significant others' to health insurance?

I've heard it a couple of times that the Feds passed a law requiring employers to allow 'significant others' to be added even if they are not married. I also heard it was due to same sex relationships.

The reason I ask, is that my fiancee does not have insurance and we aren't getting married for a couple more months. I don't want to wait to add her if I don't have to.

(Yes, I realize I could just ask my employer, but I don't want to make an ass of my self at work)

it has to do with employers and stuff. it does not affect private insurance as far as i know. that is, if you request that a sig other (which qualifies) to be added to your employee benefits, your boss can't decline, legally.

this is not only for same sex couples, but there are straight couples that are not married, nor will marry (for some reason) which do behave very much like a married couple.

tauren, if she is not insured, well... you know what to do. if she is, you don't have to worry.

also, i did not know it passed already. i knew a bill was in the works, but then that was last year...

Check with your company. According to my company, a "domestic partner" can be same sex or different sex as long as they have lived with you for more than a year. My girlfriend is on my health plan for less than if she took the plan at her company. Not a bad deal at all.
