It's a work machine. Are you supposed to be running Trillian and surfing the web? What is your company's acceptable use policy? Are you in violation?
Good points there. It's especially scary that you are evidently running an IM client with full Administrator privileges. Can I suggest that you reduce your regular account to a Limited account (which would be called a "Restricted User" account if you guys have a domain) and at least operate that way, if this behavior is actually allowed. You don't want to be the guy letting the latest & greatest variant of Gaobot loose on your company's LAN.

As far as the hardware aspect goes, please give more details on your computer. What exact processor (P4 2.4, 2.4A, 2.4B, 2.4C), what exact motherboard chipset, is it equipped with dual-channel already if the chipset has DC capability. Does it have an AGP slot or PCI-E x16 slot.

Personally, I take the simple path here: I supply my own office computer. It's not bad, although I wouldn't say no to a 2-way dual-core Opteron rig...

e

I think you mean it has 1024MB, which is 1 gig, not 1.24 😛

It doesn't seem like you should need more than 512MB for what you are doing, but he seemed willing to double up to 1 gig, so I say just do it.

BTW if the slowdown occurs at mid-day, it may be the daily antivirus scan is running. I run them starting at 12:10PM with CPU load capped at 40%, figuring most of our fleet will still have them done by the time lunch is over.
