Is it still proper to put the man's first name after Mr. and Mrs. ??

I know this has historically been the case, but I'm not sure if it done still. If it is still done, is it a rule that must be followed.

I ask because I am addressing renewal letters to members of a non-profit organization.

I think it's generational thing that is changing.

If you use Mr. and Mrs. First Last, you might offend some people.
If you simply use Mr. and Mrs. Last, you are unlikely to offend anyone.

Cost/benefit analysis suggests skipping the First name, IMHO.

What if they hyphenate?

Yes, but it isn't used very often. I've only had to do that for things like formal invitations. Otherwise, you just use Mr. and Mrs. Lastname.

Unless the wife is a doctor and the husband is a nobody, then you can use Mr. and Mrs. Dr Jane Smith. At least that is what I want people to refer to me and my future doctor wife as.

I didn't even think about titles other than Mr./Mrs. I do know that there are official etiquette rules for that situation though. I think that is correct though.

Or she uses a different last name?

I think it is not only proper, but easier, to use Mr. & Mrs. HisfFirst HisLast. Anyone who gets offended by this is looking for an excuse to be offended.

True. In some cultures, the wife retains her surname.
