Is it still necessary to do a fresh install of OS on a new hard drive?

I know this was always recommended back in the Windows 98 days, but is it still necessary? I would much rather just copy the whole image on (however you do that) to the new drive and not have to reinstall everything.

I've figured out how to do it. I'm just wondering if it is a good idea?

You would need a cloning program to accomplish what you are looking for. Norton ghost would work. As long as you are only switching hard-drives it should work perfectly for you.

Edit: I just saw your newest post. It should work fine as long as you are only switching the hard-drive. If you have changed other hardware, especially the motherboard, than problems can begin to pop up.

I recall a lot of HD companies put a ghosting program with their drives to do such a thing. At least that is what my brother had and did when he replaced his drive.
