Is it still a good idea to buy a KT133 board?

My friend is looking into building a new system, and since he's on a tight budget, I suggested him a MSI K7T Pro2A over an ASUS A7V133 or a MSI K7M. He'll be buying a Duron 800, and plans to overclock it later on.

I know that the KT133A is a good bus overclocker, but the Via Northbridge issues are a con. He has a Live original, and the last thing I want is him having problems on his first AMD setup.

BTW, are there any KT133A boards that has the Via 686A chipset?

get abit Kt133E
It is not Kt133a, yet a lot of people have reported 145fsb or higher. It is cheap as well.

I'd have to say against going with the KT133 chipset at present, and only under certain circumstances do the issues with the 686B + SBLive! combination come to light.

Yes there are KT133A based boards utilizing the older 686A south bridge

huh?...

kt133= BAD IDEA.

man systems run perfectly fine even with such a big piece of crap live sound card and a 686B southbridge...don't fret - just let the live (crap) use the slot that shares resources w/ the AGP slot (right next to it)...

i do believe the Soyo K7VTA-Pro si the best bang/buck kt133a board w/ multiplier/vcore/fsb adjustment, and memory tweaks (4-way interleaving, cas, etc.)...

otherwise i'd suggest the Epox 8kta3...the MSI board is poop...and Asus is simply overpriced.

zzzz, the KT133E does not officially support 133MHz FSB so he would be overclocking both the PCI and AGP buses if he ran at 133MHz FSB. Also, he stated a desire to avoid the 686B south bridge which is used by the KT133E.

I've read good things about the KT133E, but since here in Brazil it's very very hard to find one, albeit impossible, boards with this chipset is not an option. 🙁

The only ones that are available at reasonable cost are the 3 mentioned above in my post.

buy whatever cheapest in your place,
next time upgrade to newer cpu, you probably will need to buy newer mb.
so the answer for the title question is yes.

my epox 8kta2 (686b) doesn't have any problem with my sb live value original retail.
