Is it standard procedure for Amazon to delay orders that use free shipping?

Yesterday I ordered a digicam from Amazon. It said they normally shipped within 24 hours, but it estimated the ship date as the 18th - 4 days later. I called to verify that they did indeed have it in stock (they did). As of 30 minutes ago it still hadn't shipped & was showing the 18th.

I decided it was worth the $20 to have it by this weekend, so I changed my shipping to 1 business day.

Now it's being prepared for shipping & cannot be changed.

Oh well, as long as I get it this week I'll be happy.

They don't say anything about prioritizing based on shipping class. I don't have any problem with it, but if I'd known that was the case I'd have done it in the first place & had the camera tomrrow.

Granted Amazon is on a little bigger scale than places like Newegg, but some warning would be nice.

Did you say they said the ship date was the 18th? Whenever I check out at amazon they've always made it pretty clear that the free shipping is not going out until days after others would

They said that after the order was placed.

I've always smacked people for assuming paying for next day shipping bought them faster order processing, for most places I've shopped they ship it when they ship it & the total time is:

Their standard processing time + transit time

Amazon is obviously different, I've just never noticed it before (usually only order small, unimportant stuff from them).

It sure seems that is the case...I am sure they have some type of priority queue on shipping. I'm not complaining though...if I needed stuff sooner I would just buy it somewhere else or pay shipping.

Yes, they definitely delay free shipping orders. Actually that is phrased poorly. They don't purposely point to your package and say "slow that one down!" It's more like 'take your time with that one. it has a lower priority."

I'm sorry, Gregg. I ordered some stuff Sunday from Amazon: Art of Bass CD (old drums + bass CD from 1996) and some star wars figurines. I got free shipping and I already have some of them. :p

That's always been my experience previously, which is why I was surprised to see the 4 day delay.

Don't always believe what they have on their website. I've received items before the estimated ship date before.
