Is it sometimes wrong to tip?

OK, so I had to drop off a paper at school so I parked in a no park zone inside of my campus.. Yeah, I know, I was a turd for doing that but I had 5 minutes to hand in the paper and it's finals period so the lots are all full...So, anyways, I drop off the paper and come back to my car- it has a ticket on it AND the battery is dead.... I call roadside assitance and they tell me that there's an hour wait.. So I track down one of the campus security gaurds and ask him to give me a boost - he graciously does so and also notices the ticket.. He takes the $50 ticket and shreds it telling me that it's cool since my car was disabled at the time... Since he saved me so much time and a pretty big parking ticket I happily handed him $10- but to that he seemed kinda insulted and said "You don't have to pay me.".. I insisted that he saved me so much time and went out of his way so he eventually accepted, but still.. Should I have not tipped him?

you shouldn't have insisted

it was ok to offer, but if he declined , you should have wished him happy holiday and moved on

I didn't ram it down his throat- my insistance was less about the money and more because I felt that I offended him (I was explaining because I didn't mean to make him feel like an underling)

The same thing happened to me when I was in FL on vacation. I was having problems with my vehicle and asked the hotel maintenance guy if he knew anything about cars and he happened to fix them on the side. He helped me out with something simple that I knew nothing about and I tried to give him some money for his time but he politely refused it.

I thought he was a pretty nice guy for not only helping me and thus saving me a trip to a garage but not even wanting anything for it.

haha.... just the mere mention of the word "underling" and I'm sure he regretted helping you out to begin with.

Apparently you are quite lacking in people skills.

Hey now,
I didnt't view him as one.. In fact, a friend of mine is a security guard for my school (I was actually looking for her) and i hated how awkward that moment was.. It is funny that you're able to judge me just by me wanting to tip someone.. Weird world we live in..

P.S. And I did not use the word underling in our conversation.. In fact, I was just extremely thankful and respectful throughout our brief conversation (and bitching about Hyundais as well).

do not, ever, tip any form of official staff, or officers (that includes rent-a-cops).

comes across as possibly being bribery.

Never thought of it that way..... Your right, I should have gotten him a pack of beer or something instead...

That's what I was thinking. It wouldn't look good if someone was watching...

i was thinking that a 20 is a minimum in such a case to show true gratitude...dunno why, just seems right for some reason 😕

Listen to this man. His words are wise.

If he tore up your ticket, aren't you still gonna get hit for it? It's just the same as if you tore it up yourself...
