is it sensible to recharge regular batteries?

just got a battery charger, and it seems to charge regular (un-rechargeable) batteries alright. but it says, both on the batteries and the charge, to not charge them, cautioning about leaks, fires, etc. i was just wondering how often does that kind of stuff happen?

I believe if you charge them REALLY REALLY slow its not as bad.

Alkaline batteries not designed for recharging have the unfortunate habit of exploding. Quite the mess.

Try it.

You just might be the next candidate for the Darwin award.

I dunno, but doing a risk vs. reward analysis, I'd think the cost of rechargeable batteries vs. the possibility of fire/explosion, or at least damage to the charger, would be a no-brainer.

I have a friend at work who use to charge his Alkaline AA batteries on our Motorola Walkie Talkie chargers at work. He would wrap the ends of it in aluminum foil to make a circuit then place the other two ends on the prongs of the charger. I use to always tell him not to do it but he never listened, one day I came in to work and I found battery acid all over the charger.

Since he's asking is it sensible, he is missing his brain ;)

fourth of july is in a few days...why not try and make your own fireworks by recharging alkaline batteries in a charger?

Yes, recharge your regular batteries in the charger. Have your mom report the results to us.

Does the manufacturer's warning mean nothing to you? They don't want to get sued because someone blew their face off by trying to charge a battery not meant to be recharged.

Maybe you should try throwing the batteries in a fire and see what happens then.... :D

you guys missed the point. i, err, somebody in my family, had already tried it before i made this post, not realizing that you are not supposed to do that. and it worked. while, i do see the warnings and stuff, i was surprised that it worked in the first place. i know it's not sensible, but i don't think they are going to listen to me. anyways, the real question was how often do such accidents happen (what are the odds)?

"Whoever" charged that battery got lucky. If you want to play the odds go ahead, it is quite likely that a regular alkaline in a regular battery charger will leak or explode. THAT IS WHY THIER IS A BIG ASS WARNING ON THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I wouldn't do it especially considering you can buy a Panasonic NiMH charger with 4 AA NiMH's for $9.99 at your local Big Lots B&M.
