Is it safe to use a microwave with paint peeling off the roof?

Some douche exploded their food a few weeks ago in the common microwave and didn't clean up. Being a good samaritan, I tried cleaning the caked on curry/soy sauce coating on the inside of the microwave. Used soap and water and the boiling water trick to steam the microwave and as I was wiping the inside, I find that the coating on the inside roof of the microwave had bubbled over and was chipping.

So is it safe to keep using the microwave ATOT?

If it's a chinese made microwave, it's probably lead based paint beefed up with some asbestos.

I'd scrape the paint. It's fine as-is, but kind of a PITA to cover everything you put in there. Scrape off the loose paint, and cook away.

Ugh, not covering your food in the microwave is nasty, well at least not your own. Find it disgusting how shit just splatters all inside. I cover the stuff in my own microwave as well and I always check to make sure nothing splattered when I'm done.

When you look in the microwave and you see more food then you do the actual walls, there is something wrong.

Well it's obviously a problem if the paint is chipping off into the food. I'm assuming the OP is worried about something else, because no one on the planet is stupid enough to ask if it's ok to eat paint chips.

Some people think microwaves are filled with dragons and magic unicorns and will do scary things under slightly out-of-the-ordinary conditions.

Well I was concerned with the paint chipping off huge chunks in the microwave as well as the metallic layer underneath the coating which is being exposed to the microwaves.

On a side note, is it safe to drink out of a cup if the logo has peeled becuase it has been washed?

It should be safe, any paint would likey have to be food safe to be used in an appliance like that. And the metal is perfectly safe too. Metal generally isn't a problem in microwaves. Heck, older microwaves often came with metal racks so you could elevate your food or cook two things at once.

But, with a disgusting old microwave and new ones costing as little as $50, I don't see any reason not to just get a new one.

Years ago(probably before you were born) they had issues with painted glasses containing lead. I don't know how serious it was, but there was talk going around regarding it. I imagine it would be more of an issue with young children, and the odds of paint containing lead are greater with Chinese crap, but I wouldn't worry about it.

I disagree with the word "roof" being used to describe the ceiling of the microwave.

That, and any microwave that has peeling paint probably has so many other issues (leaking radiation and such) that the peeling paint should not be an issue.... at least, not the main on.
