Is it safe to use a CD Lens cleaner in a car stereo?

Well, the HU on my car has been reading CDs kinda weird lately, and i was thinking that one of the CD laser lens cleaners might help, but are they safe to use on slot-loading CD players?

i've been told never to use those... supposedly they do more harm than good... so i just spray compressed air in there... but then again i've been told that's a bad idea too...

Why not pull out the head unit, open the cover and gently clean the lens with a swab?
