Is it safe to unplug the monitor while computer is on?

And plug it in while the computer is on?

Asking this because I may start building computers for a few friends, I don't want to have to unpack each monitor to OC each one 🙂

VGA, sure. Don't hot-plug DVI cables, however. I learned this the hard way and toasted the DVI side of my Radeon 7500 (yeah, big loss there, huh? 😉). If I want psychedelic alternate-universe display mode, then I can get it by using the DVI output on the Radeon 7500 now 😕

Really? Ugh. That's good to know. Thanks for the investigative personal sacrifice. 🙂

I've never had any problem with unplugging and re-plugging 'VGA' connectors while "live" (ground the outer shield part of the connector to the chassis, of course), but I don't have a lot of experience with DVI yet. I did unplug and replug using the DVI-to-VGA adaptor on my dual-head AGP r9200 card recently. Guess I'll have to watch out. I'm more afraid of having the connector forces cause the card to loosen out of the AGP slot and fry the card and the mobo period if I have to fiddle with it with the machine still on.

Also, don't DVI cables also carry +5v/Gnd too? Perhaps that is part of the issue? If those wires aren't carried-through via the DVI-to-VGA adaptor, would that imply that hotplugging, with that adaptor connected, might be safe? I don't really feel like testing that, given your experience.

I did not know that. 😕

And I have a 2001FP coming (if Dell ever decides to ship it, that is :|), so that's good to know.
