is there even a diffrence from shutting off thru controller or thru console? just wondering friend had ask this question and i'm curious myself

What about using a baseball bat?

I didn't think it would cause any harm but now my 360 is having trouble reading discs.

I like to pour water on my console to shut it off. It also helps with the RRoD as it keeps it from overheating.

Don't use the side of the bat, only the ends.

I usually shut down the main breaker to the house or have the power company discontinue my power service until I feel like playing 360 again.

LOL

That's exactly whta I was wondering. The only thing I can think of is if the OP felt that Microsoft put the power button there as a joke?

oh mi good question i was always wonderin about that too like is it safe to turn the tv off by the screen, is it save to turn the lights off by the switch or should i untwist the lightbulb first to be safe, it hurts more but at least it is disconnected before it is powered down by the switch

oh yah and is it safe to use the key to turn the car off or should i just wiat till gas is all gone to be extra safe

I guess I can sorta understand where he's coming from - cutting off power to your PC by just hitting the power button is bad, instead you choose start -> shutdown from the menu to do it right.

There's that, and 360's seem to go belly up if you even look at them wrong. 😛

The 360's power button isn't like an instant-off - it's a software button like all the other ones. Evidence of this can be gathered from the fact that your 360 does a one-second dimming of the screen in software while it does this - as well as the "download stuff while 'off'" capability. There is absolutely no difference between hitting it or using the controller to do it in the dashboard.

That's not true. I turn my PC off all the time by hitting the power button. It goes through the same process as if I clicked on the shutdown button.

As funny as this thread is, I live in an apartment where (in the winter) I expect to get shocked by each and every light switch when I reach for them. We bought a humidifier to hopefully help out this winter, but I already managed to kill an OG Xbox via electrostatic shock by hitting the power button on the console. Now I only power down my 360 via the controller or Harmony remote.

R.I.P. XBMC Xbox. 🙁

Good point.

However, I think on a game console is perfectly fine unless it's got a switch on the back and not a big glowing button on the front. I mean, I'd like to think that if they did it where you weren't supposed to press the big glowing button then they would have done a test or two and determine that the average person will use that button.

OP, make sure you let your friend know he can also unlock his car by putting his key in the car door keyhole and turning it. The car door won't fall off. Also, if he has a garage door, he can pull the garage door up or down and the garage won't come crumbling down on him. Lastly, and this is a tricky one, he can also turn is TV on AND off by pressing the power button. The TV will NOT explode.

yeah I think newer hardware/windows allows that but use to it didn't. But if you hold the power for a few seconds it will shut down instantly.
