Is it safe to set my 3770K at the 4.6GHz preset?

See rig in signature.

In the ASRock UEFI you have OC preset for the CPU: 4.0, 4.2, 4.4, 4.6 and one or two more.
I'm currently using the 4.4GHz preset and was wondering how safe those presets are? I also have the CoolerMAster 212 EVO+Arctic Silver 5 TIM...

So, are those presets safe?

I'll predict 2 answers before they come up:

1) No, it's too much voltage, you'll kill the chip. Just figure the settings out for yourself and you'll be much better off.

2) Sure you'll kill the chip, but it's life will go from 50 years to 30. You'll own it 1 or 2. Who cares.

Seems to me that - if it runs fine, and is truly stable, then go with it. Otherwise, what is your threshold of "safe"? Keeping in mind that overclocking is inherently unsafe to begin with (kinda like thinking driving at 180mph is totally good, but thinking 185mph is somehow any different).

I am sure they are. Just not as fine tuned as one could probably do themselves (Meaning they are probably putting a lot more voltage to the CPU than needed)

What is the CPU voltage @ 4.4Ghz loaded? Temps?

Safe voltage for Ivy, well that's really up for debate. Some say 1.35v others 1.4v - I would personally stay below 1.4v - heat becomes as huge issue at that point anyway if your on air.

Weird thing happened: at 4.6GHz the Catalyst drivers don't load properly lol...dropped down to 4.4GHz and it was ok again, loaded as usual.

@Face2Face: At 4.4 the voltage is 1.236v on the CPU and max temps under load are 59C at max.

Think i'll downclock to 4.2 just to stay in the safe zone...

Yikes. Stick with 4.4Ghz stable. If you want any higher your voltage you will also have to raise and things get too hot and COMP crashes, or possibly CPU dies. gl

Are you sure? Sounds like you got a lot of room to play with. But if you are happy with the performance then that's fine too.

I like the sound of 4.4, 4.5, 4.6, but I see no reason to do it. The chip in my sig runs great at default so I see no reason to push it above what the default voltage gives you.

I run mine around 4.0, just because I am too much of a geek to keep it at stock.

You have two limits to watch for. The voltage put into the CPU and the temperature under full load. Set it to 4.4 and run Prime95 and Linx and look at the voltage and the temperature over a period of time. If the voltage is sub 1.35V and the temperature is below 85C then everything will be fine. All there is too it.

Chances are 4.6 didn't work because the setting isn't pushing enough voltage into the CPU to allow it to work. You might be able to get that speed but you'll need to learn to overclock (which would be a good idea anyway honestly).

blind auto oc is unpredictable.

do not mind auto oc if the parameters are known.

manual oc is best.

live and learn.

I ran the ASRock UEFI OC preset at 4.6 once it worked but it also oc the llc and clocks on the graphics 4000 which I didnt want.
I reset every manually and used (Intel XTU) to fine tune.

4.2 seems to be a waste on 3770k unless you want a nice quiet pc then its good idea.
At 4.6 llc 1 = 2 seems to work good.
At 4.7 up I need to use llc 1 in ibt.
This chip is nice at 4.5 with -1.34v and llc 2.
