Is it safe to run 163mhz bus???

I'm just wondering if this is a safe speed, considering the PCI bus is running at 40.75mhz, and AGP at 81.5mhz. I'm just worried that this could damage some components running on those buses, especially PCI, like maybe the harddrives since they are essentially using the PCI bus right?
Anyone have any input on this?

Anything over spec is not SAFE.

If you want to be safe dont overclock, but if you want to overclock then you takes your chances.;)

I know this. I am willing to take the chance, just want to know if it's dangerous for harddrives mainly, or if it's reasonably safe. Also I'm pretty sure not everyone, at least PC enthusiasts, abides by the 133mhz bus limitation.

Yes, it is dangerous for hard drives especially. I wouldn't go above 150MHz FSB personally.

Just do it. The worst that will happen is that the system will not POST and you will have to clear CMOS.

that is totally untrue, overspec PCI bus can lead to harddrive corruption

Well a couple mixed opinions I see. I've heard that it can affect harddrives down the line but haven't heard many people talk about failures from it. I may down the speed to around 150 but that's as low as I want to go really.

What board are we talking about? If you can, just up the FSB to 166 and use a 1/5 divider.

Now that I think about it that would only be the case if the harddrive couldn't tolerate the PCI bus at that speed at all and wouldn't boot. I'm already running at 163mhz and am concerned about long term damage.

The IWill has a 1/5 divider, kt266/a has only 1/4 PCI divider, though

I have the Epox 8k7a+, Amd 761 chipset, it only has a 1/4 PCI divider. Isn't it just the very NEW chipsets that support the 166mhz bus and 1/5 divider?

I have the 7dxr (for a few more days), so I know what you are talking about. I would be VERY careful getting much higher than 163. I've heard of people going to ~170s, but I've also heard of crashes.

I'm getting a northwood 1.6/asus p4s333, and I'm pretty excited. I just flip a swith and take it to 2.133 with all my AGP/PCIs running at spec. Talk about a killer OC.

Thnx for the advice Dave. So do you think I should be concerned about damage in the longterm at 163mhz, or just system crashes from time to time? I'm starting to think I should down it to 150 until I can get a mb with 1/5 divider.

Oh btw NICE overclock it will be indeed.

I thought the 8k7a had a 1/5 divider in one of it's BIOS's. I've also seen data corruption on HD's from OC'ing the FSB. This can cause OS instability which may require reinstall or repair.

Ya, I looked into that quite a bit and it turned out to be just a rumor about the 1/5 divider and the Epox 8k7a. I even emailed them about it. Oh well. I just downed the speed to 155mhz 10.0 divider, I should be fine here.
