Is it safe to remove cooling fins on Dominator GT?

Hey there,

I recently bought a Noctua NH-D14 cooler. In order to install this thing on my system, I'm going to be forced to remove the cooling fins of at least one of my sticks of Dominator GT RAM. I won't be able to use the Corsair fan that came with the cooler either.

Is it safe to remove these cooling fins? I plan on running the RAM at 1400ish Mhz with a modest 3.8 Ghz overclock on my i7 920.

Oops! Forgot to mention I'm using an Antec Twelve Hundred case. It's got this massive fan at the top, but I'm pretty sure that fan is pulling air into the case. I could be wrong though, will have to double check once I get home from work.

I saw Noctua's picture with the dominator ram and the cooling fin removed, I'm just wondering if it's safe to do so for the RAM. After all they come with gigantic heat spreaders and a cooling fan, none of which I'll be able to use with this heatsink. :/

It wasn't Dominator and I can't remember what ram it was, but I removed a memory spreader once and one of the chips pulled off the board. Needless to say the ram didn't work after that.

Why does the ramm need such glamorous heatsinking? Are you running them at 2.0v or something? O thought they were roasting marshmellowss

I sa

The top fan is exhaust. But you can remove the fins off one of the sticks. You'll need a hex/allen wrench. I had to do it with my Dominator GT's. You could probably leave the black heatspreader on and just take off the red/blue heatsink on top.

Yes, the cooling fins on top of the DHX+ heat sinks are designed to be removed. You should have no issues from removing them.
