Is it safe to plug 120mm fan into mobo fan headers?

May seem like a stupid question, but hey, I'm a noob at this so can I plug a 120mm fan into my mobo's 3pin fan headers? I've heard that it might not be a good idea and also that it is perfectly safe. Maybe one of you guys could clear it up for me. Thanks very much.

Your mobo manual should list the max watts that your fan headers can handle. Then you need to know what your fan is rated for.

You also have to keep in mind the other components you are using in your system. If you think you might be taxing the +12V line, don't use the 120mm 3-pin header. If you aren't using a lot of hardware, and you find the ratings for the fan, and what the mobo can handle, then there are no worries. If you are unsure, however, I would not recommend it because of the damage that it can cause...
Tas.

From what some of the quality MoBo makers have told me, the fan headers can handle up to a 6 watt fan on the average. But it's always best to check with your board maker as there are a ton of different boards out there as you know. A quick email to their tech support doesn't take any time at all.
