No, It's not safe for your External Hard Drive. It may affect the performance of your external hard drive with a drop in it. So, it's better to either move your woofer from that place or move your external hard drive.

Woofers belong on the floor - drives belong on the desk or table.

I don't know if I would be so concerned with the magnetics (is the woofer shielded?), as I would simply the loud vibrations, that could cause head crashes on the HDD.

Vibrations and magnetic fields are both a relative concern, from a manufacturer point-of-view. Desktop-grade external drives don't have much in the way of Vibration detection hardware/firmware the same way a drive like our IronWolf/IronWolf Pro would (these have built in Rotational Vibration sensors), and hard drives are a form of magnetic media. To better understand why this is potentially a problem, here is our animagraff of how a hard drive works. In short, hard drives and strong magnetic fields and/or vibrations, not a good fit.

So, the consensus answer is "No!"

From a trusted source: leaving your HD on or near your speaker, Won't do a bloody thing. The magnetic coercivity of a HDD platter is enormous, around 1,500 Oersted (A ferrite magnet is around 50 Oe). You'd need an MRI machine to degauss that, and then you've induced enough current to fry the controller anyway.

Vibration is a more legitimate concern.

Old style CRT monitors had issues with speaker magnets, maybe floppies, but that is about it. Vibration can be an issue, but that could be with the sub anywhere in the room and the device located in a "hot" spot.
