now that some time has passed, is it safe to install it? I didnt install it initially because of all the bugs that were out there initially.

Well not much has changed since the introduction of sp2 so you will just have to try it and see yourself.

I have it on my desktop. Some laptops though i've seen have had issues with it. Personally on my last sony vaio when i updated to sp2 my battery life went down. think it's cause battery control features weren't there. but i went to sony and they had patch out for it couple months later. IMO it's ok either way. extra security features worthless though. i had better performance under sp1 personally.

I installed SP2 and I have no problems. Actually it seems to be a little quicker for me and seems... more stable.

As of now I think there was only 1 update after sp2, something to do with IE? It was small, and quick to download. I like sp2 so far. :) ahahah shoot me now

it has always been safe to install SP2 (as long as you do not have TVMedia adware on your machine that is, adaware has a plugin to dispose of it)

My girlfriend had a problem with sp2 on her laptop. After the install, he laptop had trouble shutting down, and several programs became corrupted. However on my desktop I haven't had any problems at all.

I've installed SP2 on all of my personal computers as well as our company PC's without a hitch. The only issue that's come up is when certain programs needed to be unblocked on program start due to SP2 enabling the firewall. This is done easily enough from the popup asking you to either block or unblock the specific program.

For more information visit the SP2 support page:
http://support.microsoft.com/d...x?&pr=windowsxpsp2

Fyi there is also a list on the MS knowledge base of all applications/programs that have compatability issues with SP2. You might want to check it prior to installation to see if you have any software that could be in potential conflict.

XP SP 2 is really annoying. It adds several "security" processes that downloads updates and a security wizard. Since I disabled my firewall, the stupid security item keeps alerting me that my computer is not safe. If you are gonna turn off the firewall, don't install it.

You have to install it. You have no choice.

There are severe design/bug issues with Windows XP that have cropped up in the past few years or so and SP2 is a partial fix for these problems.

Basicly it doesn't matter if it screws up your machine or is annoying. Most of the annoyances can be mitigated and if it screws up your machine your better off formating and reinstalling from the cdroms all over agian then running WinXP without SP2.

You could always turn off the security center service.
