Is it safe to Install SP1 and SP2 directly after a reformat and clean install of XP?

Hi all, What I did was download SP1 and SP2 (the IT one so I dont need an internet connection to install them). I want to do this because the internet connection at my college is slow and it takes a while to download. I wanted to know if there is any problem right after installing XP, that I first install SP1 and then immediatly install SP2? Or should I install SP1- then use microsoft update for all the little hot fixes and then install SP2?

Thanks!

install sp2 first then after you reboot use the microsoft update to get all of the other updates that it missed. it might be a good idea to choose the custom install as there are some updates that are not shown in the express one. Usually it's not too important but sometimes it contains newer drivers for your hardware.

If slipstreaming SP2 isn't an option for you, have Microsoft send you SP2 on a CD (I did, it was free), then install Windows XP and then SP2 BEFORE connecting the computer to the internet.

slipstreaming is the way to go... there are a few good guides on how to do it... the one I like is over at tacktech.com

SP2 is not free on a CD any longer. They now want you to have a credit card to charge a fee to before they will send you one, and if you send an eMail to ask where to send a money order for it instead, they ignore you. Another reason to stay with W2K.

Why, is Windows 2000 SP4 available for free on CD? It's not like an unpatched W2K machine is going to have less issues when connected to the internet than an unpatched XP machine.

Given that I do happen to have SP4 for W2K on a CD, however I got it (thanks, MechBgon!), and had it once before and managed to lose it, I know those are a lot more common in the PC Geeks' software archives. I remain annoyed that MS doesn't even acknowledge the eMail (sent via their solicitation for queries on the download pages, with the included promise of a reply within 48 hours), not necessarily that there is a small charge now.
