Is it safe to get an Advance Auto Part car battery?

Took it to an independent Audi garage and they said both alternator and battery were bad.

Rebuilt Bosch is going to be either $400 / $475 (90 amp or 120 amp, depending upon what is already in car), with 3.5 hours labor @ $80/hr (Interstate battery is $150 installed).

Independent Audi garage up in New York where my parents live was $300 / $350 + 2 hours labor @ 75/hr, but don't think it would be safe to drive 500 miles to get there. 🙁

The battery is not worth a $75 install fee. Go buy any battery, Advance, Autozone, Walmart, Sears, and put it in yourself, installation is about 5 minutes, 10 minutes if you have 0 clue what you're doing. Looks like they're trying to charge you 1hour labor for battery install, which is insane.

As for the alternator, Audi had 3 for the 1.8T in 1999, a 70A, 90A and 120A. Even a 120A alternator from a salvage yard with a grade A condition is at most $120, and can be as low as $30. Hell a lifetime warranty, tested 120A alternator is $45.

I've used this website before when I worked at a dealership and it's fine.

Hell a reman alternator from Advanced shouls cost you no more than $160-$200.

Autozone Durlast Gold for my car was about $160 installed; similar price at Advance Auto.

Garage I have used up in New York said their cost for Bosch rebuilt was $300 (list $500). Guys on Audiworld forums said to stay away from anything other than rebuilt Bosch, as I am asking for early failure (months) if I got something else from say Autozone or Advance Auto.

Someone on Audiworld offered me an alternator from a 1999 Audi A4 1.8T that had about 90,000 miles on it, but had been in a crash (he was reputable member and said car ran fine after crash). Problem is my car uses either a 90 or 120 amp alternator and there is no way to tell until part is taken out of car. Thank you for the link, though.

Gonna try and keep car for at least 100,000 miles (car has 59,000 miles on it), but these Audis do seem best suited to someone who is car savvy and can DIY a lot of the maintenace because maintenace and repairs seem to get expensive real fast; my next car will probably be a boring Civic that is pretty much maintenace free for 100,000 except for oil changes and minor parts here and there.

Decided to minimize excess driving and just had everything done at one place.

Did get them to throw in free synthetic oil change with above work.
