Check someplace like webmd. It usually depends on the particular drug. I took amoxicillin for a sinus infection, and it's fine to drink while taking that.

It depends what they are. I was given Cipro, and another, even stronger antibiotic when I had colon surgery recently, and was told I would get violently ill if I drank on the stronger one. I was not allowed to drink at all until I was through my treatment regimen.

Alcohol supposedly alters the composition of your stomach and can inhibit absorption of the antibiotics. That's what I was told, at least.

A guy I know has firsthand knowledge that antibiotics make birth control ineffective.

that is correct. It also makes them less effective with alcohol in the system.

The only thing I know is that you're not supposed to take Doxycycline with milk...

The only antibiotic i know that you can't take with alcohol is Metronidazole/Flagyl.

In general it's a bad idea. I tried taking antibiotics during a weeklong Long Island Ice Tea fest, and the result was the antibiotics were rendered ineffective and the infection they were supposed to cure developed a resistance to that brand of antibiotics.

If you are sick enough to be on antibiotics, you shouldn't be taxing your immune system unnecessarily.
