Is it safe to buy a digital camera for cheap in the Caribbean?

I am in the market for a digital camera, and my parents will be visiting a friend in the U.S. Virgin Islands in a month. According to the guy digital cameras are quite cheap down there, and my parents want to buy mine when they are there. I figure these cameras are grey market, and at the best I will end up with a real camera with no warranty. My opinion is that it is a better idea to just buy it up here in the states. Am I correct?

When I was in Barbados/Grenada, I noticed that a lot of the electronics were more expensive than they are in Canada/USA...

Prices in the Caribean aren't that great. You can find better deals in the HD forum.

QFT, when I was in Aruba, digicams were easily $100usd more than normal retail prices.

Thanks, I don't know what my parents' friend is smoking then. I'll keep checking for hot deals.

I'm likely getting a Canon A530 unless I can get a deal on something better for almost the same price. I'd love the A700 but I won't have any money leftover to get an adapter and polarized filter.

It's a better deal than what you'd find at Best Buy. For example, last time we were down there they wanted $900USD for a Canon 350D with lens. Cheaper than the MSRP, but more than you'd pay after about 5 minutes on the Internet.
