Is it rude to not answer the door to anyone that knocks?

The only people I'll answer the door to is if I know you, are the police, or the neighbor next door. Solicitors, bible thumpers and any other strangers can knock all you want I'm not answering. Sometimes I'll turn down my music or the tv and check but just turn them back up without answering.

If that's rude then I suppose I'm right there with you. We have cameras around the house (one at the front door) so I don't even have to get up from the computer to see who it is.

I don't feel so.

Solicitors should expect it. I hate when you do answer and say "Not interested" they kind of get defensive and/or want to discuss it further.

I have had some that appreciated that immediate response, it lets them know proceeding is futile. I respect their time, now I am expecting them to respect mine. Win/win.

Why would that be rude? It's your house. You're under no obligation to engage with them just because they're banging on the outside of it.

Not rude...but I rarely don't answer the door...if only to tell the offender, "GET THE FUCK OFF MY PROPERTY!"
Jehovah's Witnesses, door-to-door salesmen, landscapers trying to drum up business...all get the same treatment.

Nope. Why would it be? Someone should never be able to call you rude just because they demanded some of your time and didn't get it.

If I'm not expecting anyone, I don't answer. If someone wants to come see me they can arrange it beforehand, communication tools are ubiquitous.

That's exactly what I do as well. Anyone else obviously wants something from you, probably money. F*ck 'em.

I think it is rude to knock on my door if I'm not expecting you. If I didn't invite you on my property what makes you think I want to talk to you?

EDIT: In other words, 'You kids better stay off my lawn!'

If I'm not expecting anyone and I don't recognize the person I usually won't answer the door.

You know what's rude? Soliciting me in my own home.

Only when I'm not expecting you. I'll peek at the side window (curtains drawn/closed) to check out who it is.
I never go in front of the door and ask "who is it?".

Ugh, been meaning to setup a webcam at the front door. Too many times we've had to deal with peddlers of some kind. I ignore the door, others don't. I shouldn't have an excuse either because the router is right under a window where you can see the front door.

It's rude to stop by someone's house unannounced. What if your boss suddenly knocked on your door wanting to discuss work for "only a few minutes?"
