I'm a gamer (CS:S and Battlefield) and am buying a video card/monitor...
Below is what I was going with but now that I made $600 off ebay I could spend a little more... But I don't know if it's even worth it

Monitor: Hanns?G HW-191DPB Black 19" 5ms Widescreen LCD Monitor 300 cd/m2 700:1 Built in Speakers 0.283mm x 0.238mm Pixel Pitch
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16824254001
$184.99

Video Card: 3DFuzion GeForce 7600 GT /256MB 128-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 Video Card
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications...tails.asp?EdpNo=2151056&Tab=0&NoMapp=0
($124.99 after $30.00 Mail-In Rebate)

i'd go with 20.1" and 7900gt ko but if you are too tight on the budget, go with the first options you have in the post.

7900 >> 7600

the monitor on the other hand is more a matter of personal taste. Id definitely go with the better video card, because those are more noticible especially in the long term.

I'm fine, either of these solutions can fit in my budget.

But none the less, if it's $200 for a small differnce I'll pass

i'd go with an ATi card as they play better in Half life based games (cs:source) i dunno but possible bf2 also. a 7900gt wouldn't get you 100+ fps with good quality settings in cs:s, but the 2nd setup IS worth $200 more

look at benches, they are very close, sometimes the x1800xt wins, sometime the 7900gt wins, but for $200 i think the x1800xt is a better deal.

Factory overclock cards aren't worth the money.

The X1800XT has 16 pixel pipelines, but it has 48 pixel processors ;)

well the factory overclocked video card is the same price as the non-factory overclocked video cards... don't see why I shouldn't get it

_____

Anyway where are those benchmarks at, I'd like to see how those cards performed at wider resolution in Battlefield 2

That should probobly seal the deal

you are splitting hairs - the ati control center allows o/cing the cards when in 3d mode, as in gaming. my card can do 690/1600 on stock cooling and probably higher with another app, but honestly you don't see it as the fps i get is well over 60 all the time. in fact in bf2 with all settings on high except dynamic shadows and lighting(i don't like them) i ran fraps and it was like 80-100 whenever i would look up no matter what the circumstances are. this is at 1280x1024, at 1600x1200 it will go down but definately still be playable. personally i would save the $80 difference between the 2, but your $$$ is your $$$

Yep, Connect3D has a X1800GTO for 200, with a 20$ MIR. Should be somewhat equal to the X1800XT.

Doh!

Oh well, it was still a better deal than the 7600GT I was planning to buy.

I like the monitor, unless someone sees something wrong with it.

One reason I prefer Nvidia is it's so much either to tell whats better even before the specs... Now ATI there's like 10 versions of each card

Could I have direct newegg links of the versions I should look at please

nvidia is not much better - you have the 7800gs(agp), 7800gt and 7800gtx....with ati the best bang for the buck is usually the xt model, which is usually there second from the top, or in some cases the to. like a x1900xt vs a x1900xtx - the xt can do the xtx speeds....

like I did before

GPU Radeon X1800XT
Core clock 625MHz
PixelPipelines 16
Memory Clock 1500MHz

Geforce 7900GT KO
Core clock 520MHz
PixelPipelines 24
Memory Clock 1540MHz

Isn't the 7900 GT KO better? or is the core clock the most important spec
