Is it really worth the effort to do custom settings on your a/v receiver?

I have a Yamaha HTR5890 and it came with a mic that supposedly sits it up, but I doubt it works that great. I just leave it on basic settings, is it worth the trouble?

Biggest single advancement and best thing a home theater can have is auto calibration.

I don't know the implemenation of your model, but it is a HUGE deal

Agree with above. It is huge.

And it's free, and it takes 15 minutes.

Think about it this way...

1) Spend a month or two properly positioning speakers, which should be done anyway
2) Calibrating phase and equialization of each channel depending on the room
3) Another two days to really get it right using ears and an analyzer

Or just press a button. Eitherway, the biggest element in your HT is the room. Second to that is speaker positioning, thirdly your speakers, fourthly the equipment.

The auto-calibration stuff can take a 40+ hour process and make it a press of the button. One would be very foolish to not take advantage of this technology, use it as a base and tune from there.

i don't use it. Something is messed up with stupid Denon Audissey EQ. It sucks the bass life out of my system, including setting my sub at -12db. subjectively, it sounds much much better with the optimizations off. I still use it for calculating distance/delay, but i leave the EQ flat. I'll do it manually if i ever have time...

I mainly use it to set the distance/delays. But being the anal retentive tweaker that I am, I then use a SPL meter and check against it.

And then I make the bass a little hot anyway. ;)
