does she have a trade skill or degree in anything?
Well, she's a librarian, has been for like 35 years... She had saved up quite a bit of money, and when sites like e-trade started popping up, she thought maybe she should teach herself some finance on the side. She read up on trading (as librarians will do copious amounts of research for pretty much anything), and started a small investment portfolio, which quickly grew. She claims she only puts about 10 hours a week into research and trading, but she's making pretty good bank off it (she's still working as a librarian full time). I think she spends more than 10 hours, personally, since it sounds like she treats eTrade like a PopCap game... some shit to do when you're bored or have free time. It's working for her though. Don't know how she's fairing through the downturn, though.

How much does she start with to make that extra $60k? If she can consistently turn $600 into $60k in one year, year after year, even during a bear market, then perhaps she should apply for a job as a fund manager
She started small, but got into it fast when she realized that she had a much better rate of return trading than she did leaving her money in a savings account. Which is not to say she pulled out her life savings, because she's not stupid.
And yeah, if she could turn $600 into $60,000, I'd give her all my money and tell her to go hogwild. I could be up to like... 200 bucks! Oh wait, ATOT rules (I almost forgot)... I could be a kajillionaire.
