Is it really neccessary to have 360 connected to the Internet?

I ask because my 360 is not near my router, and I'm not dropping $100 on a wifi adapter.

I've used Internet Connection sharing a couple times to get updates and stuff, but other then that it stays offline. I really only play single player games, and don't have a Gold account. Yet I always seem like I am missing something if I'm not hooked up to the Internet.

No, not really...you'll miss out on updates and playing online if you have a Gold account, but if you don't care about those things, then you're not missing much at all.

You can purchase a DD-WRT compatible router for fairly cheap and use the custom DD-WRT firmware to create a wireless bridge. That's cheaper than the $100 wifi adapter.

If you don't have a gold account you can't play online anyway so no, you're not going to be missing a whole lot. As long as you can hook it up from time to time for updates/buying arcade titles you may want you should be just fine.

How far away is the router? I ran a 50' ethernet cable from my router through the crawl space to my xbox 360. Total cost under $10.

But no, you're not missing much.

Mine has only been connected to the internet for about a month during the time I've had it which is about 2-3 years now. I shouldn't have done it either, I don't like the new dashboard.

having a 360 and NOT having it connected to the net and having Xbox Live Gold is basically like having blue balls.

and the new dash just takes some time to get used to. i am not a huge fan of the new one, but I fixed an RRoD this past weekend that had the old dash on it, and man, it looks so terrible now when I see it.

I don't understand the need to ask the question...necessity is born out of your need. If you don't need to play online or download anything, then no.

If you don't have gold live than there really isn't any reason to have it hooked up all the time. Just every so often to get updates & any demos, arcade games or dlc that you want.

Even if you decided to go ahead there are cheaper ways than using the overpriced adapter depending on your current wifi setup.

I hooked my mom's 360 up to the Internet after I repaired it today since they were still using the ancient dashboard :$. I updated that, so at least they're a bit current.

But, I guess it doesn't really matter... I mean, you can download game demos if it's connected, which can be fun and is certainly a breath of fresh air from the old "buying a magazine just to play a game demo" of yesteryear.
