Ok, I decided to bite the bullet after listening to my friends.....and build <yikes>

This rig is to be used for gaming. I want it to be Vista ready. Budget...ehh cheap as possible but still kicks @ss hehe! I re-did specs thanks to everybody's suggestions!!

I'm open to any suggestions and all help 🙂

Sweet rig, my friend. I would suggest that you get a second hard drive to store all of your media, backup, and junk. Try the WD 320GB. Other than that, you have a serious rig put together.....

I bought a floppy when I built my rig.....still haven't used it once. If you want one, then get a Mitsui 7-1 floppy card reader.

PS. if you want to spend 2500 on a rig, then you might as well do it your way. You can always nickel and dime a rig, but if you like your choices, and I do too, then go for it....
 
You really don't need that much power, and Tagan is probably a step behind some of the higher end PSUs.
That RAM is probably overkill the Crucial Ballistix DDR2 1000 on sale at Newegg would be good.
There's nothing wrong with your other choices except that you might be going a bit overboard.
I assume you'll be OCing, otherwise that mobo & RAM are silly; if OCing you need a decent HSF.
No you don't need a floppy, but considering how much you're spending and that it makes setting up SATA/Raid easier the extra $10 seems trivial.
 
1) PSU is too much. even if you are going SLI later on, its still too much. You can do the job with a good 750-850W PSU (silverstone zeus 850, enermax galaxy 850) You can save $100 there.

2) That sound card is useless. Get an Xtrememusic. Save another $100 there.

3) Since you are spending so much money on the optical drive and going with Plextor, it seems quite rediculous to me not to get a SATA drive. PX-755SA is what you want.


Everything else looks mint. I would take the 200 dollars that you just saved and spend them on better ram such as the 6400C3DF. or the 8888C4DF. But its really up to you, the 8500C5DF are good too, they are just not binned as hard (with the other 2 kits you get better micron ICs).
 
If I were you I would build a machine in the <$1500 and just build another one/upgrade in a few years. No need to spend $2500 on a gaming machine unless you want to go overkill.

What kind of games will you be playing and at what resolution?

Coming in at about $2000.00 awesome!! Always nice to save a few hard earned bucks!

It sounds like you've friends who will give you a hand if you run into trouble building, which is good. I'd also like to recommend mechBgon's guide for first time builders. It's worth your time.

The guide is written by AT forum member mechBgon, a helpful fellow if ever there was one. Good luck with your first build! :thumbsup:

imho you are spending way too much. here is what i would do to save some serious $$ and still have near (~95+%) of the performance:

1 - you don't need a sli m/b and could easily get by on a 965 based m/b

2 - i would go a 6300 or 6400 and save some more $$ - you said this is a gaming rig and games at this point are gpu limited because even the 6300 and 6400 are so d@mn fast

3 - don't waste your $$ on a plextor drive - they are no better any more than lite-on, nec or benqs. plextor use to be the best optical drive, but that time is gone and now they are just overpriced

4 - psu - 600-700W enemerax, enhance, fsp or seasonic

5 - ram - just get some decent ddr2800 - don't get sucked into all the marketing hype of some of the higher end memory sticks. look for some that are made with micron D9 chips - maybe look around the forums from some that are made by g.skill = cheaper and work just as good

6 - case - personal preference but make sure that case works with a 8800gtx since it is so long

floppy - i still use mine, but i guess i am old skool
second hdd - i would get a 320GB seagate 7200.10 - good price per $$ and an excellent peformer

for a gaming rig your order of importance = psu(for overall computer stability)->gpu->ram(making sure you have enough - 2GB)->cpu->hdd(just to load up maps and start games)

you should be able to build a kick a$$ rig for $1500, $2500 is way to much considering that in 6mos it will probably be worth $1300 if that - sorry, that is just the way computers go. i would stay with the 8800gtx since that is the most important part of a gaming rig.
 
I also agree that system is WAY to much money - and no display even.

There a gazzillion threads on this already. Search the forums and save come cash.
 
I'd go with a slightly cheaper power supply with a better name brand. To answer your question, building a computer isn't hard at all. I thought it would be difficult, but it really isn't. You don't even need to know much about computers to do it too. I would say that it is no harder than putting anything together. Basically putting in some screws and connecting wires most of the time. You should be fine, as long as you know the correct safety procedures.
edit: I would also recommend getting a 320GB Seagate, I have one and that drive rocks. I would also never spend that much money on a case, but if you want it go ahead. That system is going to be amazing btw, I hope I can build something like that some day.
 
personally, i'd bump down to a 8800GTS. At 1680x1050, i don't think there'd be much difference. When you get a better monitor, you might as well get whatever GPU is the new fan favorite 🙂

I used that guide before, it's really a great guide.
 
You did not see a heatsink/fan for your system. With all you are spending the last thing you want is the stock heatsink.
The Tuniq tower is good, so are Scythe, with a good fan of your choice.

I would save something with the case, as amazing as that one looks and probably get a cheaper brand name power supply.

I think you may be better off getting less expensive quality parts now and upgrading when new and better things come around.

For the best gaming right now (and for some time to come) you need 8800GTX SLI but that would obviously cost more.
