Is it rare for mail to get lost in transit?

I sent a letter about two weeks ago (should have been delivered within 3 days) and the recipient still hasn't received it. I'm wondering whether the mail post has just slowed to a snails pace, or if my letter has been lost in transit.

Does anyone know if it's a regular occurrence? Or is it extremely rare for mail to get lost?

There is a slight possibility I may have entered the address in incorrectly. If that is the case, will they return the letter to me (the sender)? Or will they just toss it out?

Not that rare, actually. I've had at least two letters that I sent out go missing this past year and I printed correct address labels. I had multiple missing incoming things in recent years because someone in my neighborhood decided it would be fun to start stealing everyones mail. Depends if you're as unlucky as me or not.

edit: I realized that the letters I sent out were incorrectly filed when recieved, so besides mishandling and theft I haven't had any problems.

depends really, if the sender's address was on it I would put it back in the mail.
