Is it pretty much standard now for boards to support large hdd's?

I had to use maxblast to get my maxtor hard drive to get fully recognized. Do boards more commonly support this now?

It depends more on operating system than mobo. If your running anything older than XP service pack 1 you have to patch your OS and or make registry changes to get over 136gb

Windows 2000 Pro with latest Service Pack and a Regedit can also support 48 bit LBA. Hardware-wise you should be good to go on anything modern.
