Is it postal fraud to...

use the CC return envelopes to send personal letters? Like covering the printed address with a sticker and using it to send letters? I don't see any mention about this on the envelopes, but I do feel a moral obligation not to. But these are annoying CC spam we are talking about..

I'm bet its ok to fill them with an anomalous white powder and send them back to the credit card companies, so it should be ok for personal use.

It's not fraud, not even immoral or unethical. Would it be better to just throw it in the trash or recycle it unused? You didn't ask them to send you the spam.

I'm betting it is. When it scans through they're charged for the postage, at some point they probably track where it goes. I doubt you'd ever be caught, by why bother for only 37 cents? Are you THAT cheap?

I think he is speaking of using the prepaid postage on the envelopes and then mailing it to a different address. That would be illegal if it is what you are talking about. In fact, it is illegal to mail them back to the CC company with anything but a properly filled out form inside.

~10 years in jail risked over 37 cents. Your choice.

I sent envelopes back with assortment of collectables before, and even had them calling me a few times wondering wtf I sent them, without getting into trouble. I don't care about the postage, it's the spam that is pissing me off. I want to cost them as much as possible to send me spam.

Then keep sending back random crap. Send naked pictures of ugly people, or dogs doing it or something. Make it worth their time to open that ah heck up. But don't try to cheat the mail system over it, that's just not worth it.

I don't understand how I would cheat USPS. I'm actually helping their bottom line by generating revenue.

It's not as simple as that. The envelopes they send out are technically not each prepaid. The company pays for each prepaid envelope returned to the company. If you use one for personal use, the person you send it to may be charged for the postage.

That is Fing awesome! I knew you could sent back junk stuff IN the envelopes, but didn't know you could attached those envelopes to 72 lbs of junk. I'm going to start doing this from now on!

it would be funny to send them back an empty envelope just so that they are charged postage. they probably have something set up with the USPS so that the postage is only valid if it is going to the preprinted address.

I worked in a mailroom as a parttime job once... the regular guy taught me that the barcode usually on the bottom half of those are what's used to route them back... so the post office doesn't even care who it's addressed to (whatever's hand-written). They just send it whereever the bar code told them to.

Fraud only exists if you are attempting to avoid the mailing costs.

Which is exactly what he's doing.

Poster did not indicate that he was using pre-paid enevelopes.

Also, "pre-paids" (that are not stamped) cause the PO to collect from the receipent (COD).

Using pre-stamped envelopes could constitute fraud; however, the postage has already been paid to the PO, therefore the PO will not be losing any $$.
